Watercolour of The Shambles, York

As I was born in York, England, a picturesque city if ever there was one, scenes in and around York have always fascinated me and in particular, the narrow winding medieval street known as 'The Shambles', originally a street of mainly butcher's shops. This painting is based upon photographic and verbal references to show the street as it would have been in the early 1950s. Today, it is rather too falsely 'chocolate box-ey' for my taste. The last time I was there, inappropriate shops were offering their wares, even 'The Harry Potter Experience'. Not quite what I would have thought suitable for a street of such historic importance, but who am I to argue with the people who allow these things to be?

Just to be clear, I have nothing against Harry Potter, though I feel there are better York locations for it.

This is watercolour and pen work.
