This tabby kitten was painted as a response to an art group challenge. It is a small picture, about 5.5 inches by 4 inches and was created mostly using Polychromos colour pencils. An ink pen added the darkest detail and a white Posca pen supplied the highlights. It was sketched freehand on ordinary printer paper from a photo on my computer screen, after which I cleaned up the rough edges and picked out the shape more clearly with a black pen before using Tracedown transfer paper to create the finished work on Bristol board.

Watercolour of The Shambles, York

Image
As I was born in York, England, a picturesque city if ever there was one, scenes in and around York have always fascinated me and in particular, the narrow winding medieval street known as 'The Shambles', originally a street of mainly butcher's shops. This painting is based upon photographic and verbal references to show the street as it would have been in the early 1950s. Today, it is rather too falsely 'chocolate box-ey' for my taste. The last time I was there, inappropriate shops were offering their wares, even 'The Harry Potter Experience'. Not quite what I would have thought suitable for a street of such historic importance, but who am I to argue with the people who allow these things to be? Just to be clear, I have nothing against Harry Potter, though I feel there are better York locations for it. This is watercolour and pen work. Watercolour 'Winter in the Forest' Watercolour/gouache. 13" x 9" Painted on Stonehenge hot press paper, my first time of using. Nice quality, doesn't buckle much and very soon flattens out when dry. I'll certainly use  it again. 24.09.2020. This is a freely interpreted view of a Jersey lighthouse. I gave it the title 'Let there be light', but there's no biblical intention here, just (hopefully) a depiction of nature. Watercolour. 14.09.2020. This is a watercolour of  Old Italy. It is based upon a photograph I found on an internet photo site. I painted it freely and I feel it has made a successful transition from photograph to watercolour. (Sorry, SOLD) 23/09/2020. Doro...
